What Will Be Covered:

Nailing shingles is actually very simple and not rocket science, but what many roofers don’t do, typically the inexperienced ones, is that they don’t know how to nail a roof shingle so that it will stay on for a long time, because if you don’t do it right, your roof can literally blow off if a small windstorm happens to come by.

We’ll make sure that isn’t you. If you wanted to repair a small section of roof or even a whole roof, you need to know how to nail a roof shingle onto your roof and by following this process made by a Professional Roofer from Mr. Happy House, you can do just that.

Disclaimer: It is not recommended to Climb a Roof, it’s Best If You Hire a Professional Roofer to Do it.

1) Get some Roofing Nails & a Hammer

When getting nails, you must get the right roofing nails or else you could get a leak in your home if you install the wrong ones.

I recommend using 1” galventized roofing nails from Home Depot when handnailing.

With hammers, I don’t recommend anything too fancy, just a regular metal hammer will work just fine if you are going to do it yourself.

2) Input One Nail Near the Ends of Each Shingle then 2 in the Middle Spaced Evenly on the Tar Line

The tar line is there for a reason, and that’s so you can nail your shingle right! When using a 3 tab or a regular GAF shingle, place a nail on each side of the shingle on the tar line and two in the middle, and make sure the nails are spaced apart correctly.

If you don’t put the nail of the tar line or you put it above it, what happens is that you’re only nailing one shingle onto the roof which may leave it susceptible to wind damage.

By nailing the shingles on the tar line, it not only holds that shingle in place, but also the bottom one as well for double protection.

As you can see, it’s not so difficult to learn how to nail a roof shingle, just make sure you’re taking it slow to make sure everything is line before nailing, and that is one mistake many roofers make because they just to get in and out as fast as possible but forget to do a quality job.
