The 2020 color of the year has officially been bestowed upon Sherwin-Williams Naval. Naturally, the navy blue-like hue that blends in all sorts of textures is deserving of this accolade. However, at first glance, it may seem like it doesn’t deviate that much away from its cousins of Navy Blue, Cerulean, and Aqua. But at a closer inspection, you can also see a marriage of royalty and casualness to the tint. The best way to describe it is that its royal impression of purple is not overly encroaching as its other combination of casual blue. It’s somewhere in the middle where the best of both worlds apply.
To commemorate and celebrate the award given to this awardee, let’s break down why the new member of the blue family is truly deserving of this prestigious accord.
Its official color code is SW 6244. Naval is naturally a neutral color. You can see that it isn’t that muted because of a slight purple hue, but it is straightforward in the eye and demands attention without being too flamboyant. As a paint color, water, birds, and interior design applications are most appropriate for SW 6244.
Furthermore, the beautiful Sherwin Williams Naval explores richness and luxury while maintaining a modest appearance unmatched by any color. Too light, and you have an overly casual color that screams modernity in any lavish yet elegant interior designs. Too dark, and you achieved a dim and bold room that eats up all the designs and peripherals you may intend to put up to make your home a better place.
Sherwin Williams Naval is an absolute joy to look at. The paint is a mix of many grey and oceanic colours that relax the eye while giving off the wonders of both modernity and royalty.
Comparing and contrasting purely to juxtapose the different colors of the year from various awards programs will show why SW 6244 is something special. Without knocking on PPG’s Color of the Year winner, Chinese Porcelain-a pink pearl variation, or Pantone’s enthusiasm over Classic Blue, Sherwin Williams Naval has all undertones that make it unique and sound over the rest.
Why?
Entirely objective, purple is a color that needs your attention. Have all seven colors side by side, and the first thing you are in awe of when viewing all at once is the violet colors. But sometimes, it desires too much attention. Paint your entire walls purple, and you can barely appreciate the surrounding decorations, which you intend to do as well. The balance is lost when purple overpowers everything.
Secondly, blue can be blended in all sorts of media but must be applied smartly to work. Admittedly, the blue hue is not the most versatile color in the spectrum. You can’t paint any house or painting blue and expect it to work 100% of the time. However, there is a reason opaque colors like white and beige are so popular. They work almost all the time because people prefer a modern look.
Lastly, Naval SW 6244 has a lot of grey undertones. This mutes the Navy Blue’s purple influence and turns it into an easy bluish hue that gives versatility to its home and interior design. The grey undertones of Naval SW 6244 give the balance that makes it perfect for all types of textures and objects.
But combine the two, and you get yourself an indescribable feeling and trying to pinpoint why exactly it works in the first place. Just take a step back and internalize the color in your computer screens. Naval SW 6244 is simply not overpowering you with its purple but also not shy in its natural blues. It’s a confident color. The imposing will of confidence will capture you and can be versatile in the right situations.
Let’s get the elephant out of the room first. Why not paint the exterior of your house with this color? It would stand out from the neighborhood, and this hue is not uncommon for homes so that it won’t stick out like a sore thumb. Depending on the outside forces, like a front garden and the gate design, this will work.
Furthermore, the natural light is excellent with Naval SW 6244. It would pop its shade to the next level, and when dusk arrives, your house will also look great in good lighting that makes it look stealthy. Your home will get lost in the beauty around it and the nature that compliments it.
However, the problem is that this doesn’t apply to apartment buildings. So below is what all types of homes can do to make Naval stand out.
Sherwin Williams Naval can take over your walls and posts. If you are into over decorating your foyer, then consider Sherwin Williams awardee. The best thing about it is that your peripherals such as picture frames, chandeliers, and even fine carpentry won’t be on the way of its elegance; and, at the same time, won’t get overblown by its need for attention.
Afternoon salsas and dinners won’t be dull. With this hue, your kitchen will also shine compared to the typical whites you see every time. Personally, this is best to apply to walls and interior design. Anything else is just a personal taste experiment.
Why not a naval office desk? Or a naval chair together with your naval couch. A naval staircase with a naval bookshelf to go along with it is also not questionable. Experiment with this color. Having to deviate from the conventional delicate wood colour can be a refreshing new take for furniture. Why not let your creative side loose for a change? Though it’s okay to stick to the tradition, having to mix it up won’t hurt at all; if not, it would elevate the look of your home.
As you read through to this point, you might be confused about why we describe Naval as a royal color. The reason behind it is that Naval has a very similar undertone to Navy Blue. And if you squint, purple has a very subtle influence on Navy Blue. So in a sense, the very subtle influence of purple on top of the Navy Blue undertone makes Naval appear very royal. In a way, it created a child of the blue family tree that has the most royal insignia.
The accurate color undertones of SW 6244 are:
If you are into painting, a palette of navy blue and dark purple with white can achieve a close resemblance to Naval SW 6244.
Naval, in comparison to other colors
Just for sheer fun, let’s try to compare a few very similar colors in tone and shade to SW 6244.
Navy blue is probably the best color to compare Sherwin Williams Naval. The undertones are very similar, the shade is similar, and the only difference is the brightness. SW 6244 has a brighter tone than Navy Blue.
Navy blue in a far distance almost looks like a very dark blue that’s close to black. Naval appears pure, light, and comparable to the night sky at around 6 or 7 pm. Navy blue delves into the early morning sky around 4, or 5 am depending on the month.
Also, Navy Blue is great in apparel wear. Navy blue tees make one appear robust and elegant. While Sherwin’s Naval is fun to wear, it’s best in interior design and home applications. Navy blue is better on clothing and art. But that doesn’t mean SW 6244 is terrible at those. It’s just that many colors are best applied to different mediums.
Cerulean is a shade of blue that’s best compared to the consensus of oceans and bodies of water. But this is far from the truth. Contrary to popular belief, cerulean is a very unnatural color. Blue happens to be the most unnatural. Naval and Cerulean belong in the same coin on very far sides of the spectrum.
Cerulean appears to be an artistic colour above all else. As a result, it’s not recommended in homes and interior design, while SW 6244 is. Moreover, Sherwin Williams Naval is much easier to look at in the eye. Cerulean is obtrusive and wild while appearing calm. The contrast is so apparent when the two are placed side by side.
Denim can be attributed to our jeans, but it’s more than that. Denim has this coy look of sheerest subtlety while appearing fashionable. Side by side, SW 6244 is so similar in looks to Denim. As if they are twins, but not entirely.
The only difference is the navy aspect of naval is not as pronounced in Denim. Denim is a blue puritan. It identifies itself as more blue than Naval is. Naval is still blue, but the navy blue undertones with many greys make it less blue than Denim. Now thinking about it, Naval has an oversaturation of greys. So a navy blue with many grey undertones is much more outside of Denim’s loyalty to natural and pure blue.
When you diminish the grey accents of Sherwin Williams and add a lot more whites, you get Lapis. Consider this as SW 6244’s little and brighter brother. A very bright color that’s warm in the eye and looks satisfying with its glossy finish.
But in contrast to Naval, homes won’t look as majestic and modern with Lapis. Although, of course, this color can still be enjoyed in cartoons and animated films. But that isn’t all a bad thing.
Do we think that Naval from Sherwin Williams deserves the award for 2020 color of the year? Absolutely. There is just a lot of mental gymnastics to apprehend when looking at Sherwin Williams Naval. Is it a true blue? Is it royalty? Or is it something else entirely? We will never know. It brings an atmosphere that’s so subtle and can be interpreted in so many ways. Perhaps that’s why it won the award in the first place. Color enthusiasts just can’t put their fingers on what Naval is supposed to represent, what it’s supposed to say to us.
Naval SW 6244 achieves one thing, and that is to look elegant. It’s so subtle with its confidence that it’s almost that guy or gal we always dream of. If Sherwin Williams Naval were a person, they would be excellent at what they’re good at. But they won’t show you that they’re good; they’d do it. You’ll then be thinking, ‘Is this person trying to show off?’ You’re then going to make answers in your head per your observations. Sherwin Williams Naval is difficult to predict. It’s not an easy color to critique at all. It looks simple, but the complexity of it is intriguing.
The bottom line is if you’re new to the world of colors and its enthusiasm, this color works at your home. Just move a few parts, and you’ll have an elegant foyer and home office. But more than that, the paint color Naval is alarming and tormenting. It tries to say something but won’t. It teases you with its true intentions but appears meek and straightforward. Who knows what Naval is. And does it matter what it should be? All we know is that it won the award, and it truly deserves so. But you’ll never know what it’s trying to tell you; only the color gods know.
